NOW WHAT?
If you are reading this, don’t feel disheartened. Did we really like what fast fashion was giving us anyway? Isn’t it time for a shift? We get it! This whole situation looks like a nightmare, especially if you happen to be an employee or a seller, but we have to create an opportunity even if we don’t see it, and there is a really big one that a lot of us have been sleeping on – sustainable fashion.
Sustainable fashion is made in your backyard and by people who you can talk to and have a relationship with. The future is looking back to our communities.
FROM DIY TO RE-THINKING LOCAL
It all started with homemade masks. We use fashion to express our identity, by using homegrown textiles and dyes, local designers across the world have been busy creating masks that are fun, quirky, comfortable, meet health standards and are expressive of everyone’s uniqueness. I am sure all of us have been rethinking our choices and how we can help to make the planet a better place.
If you buy local, you are helping out a friend or a small business to stay in business. We want something different, a fusion, a way to use what is around us and make the most of it. Things will not and cannot go back to how they used to be. Why wait? The fashion industry as it stands right now, contributes to climate change in a big way. We get that it is cheaper for big companies to use labor from poor countries, but we know that is not okay. We know about the sweat shops, the pollution, the child labor, and the illegal animal testing. Sustainable fashion is made in your backyard and by people who you can talk to and have a relationship with. The future is looking back to our communities.
COVID-19 doesn’t have to be a death sentence for the fashion industry, we have to adapt and make sure our impact creates a healthier future with lewks made to stay and slay.
COVID-19 IS FORCING US TO ADAPT: SHOP SMART, LOOK FAB!
Manufacturers of sustainable fashion source local materials, reduce manufacturing costs by reducing transport costs, scaling down vs up creating a supply chain that is slower and focused on details, give people good wages and good jobs, and are not mass produced, each piece of clothing is unique. Sure, fashion that is sustainable tends to be more expensive and takes longer to make. It’s also hard to know what really is sustainably sourced. Remember this though, it is better quality, it will last you longer, it is versatile, and you will become an educated and smart consumer once you actually get down to the research. Don’t worry about the research part, because we got you covered. COVID-19 doesn’t have to be a death sentence for the fashion industry, we have to adapt and make sure our impact creates a healthier future with lewks made to stay and slay.
